… There was a baby shark living here for about half a year. It’s been gone from the tank for some time now, so I guess it was molesting the other fish although they themselves seemed to be too big to be a prey for it.

She strolled through the streets, passing numerous eating establishments that she hadn’t visited for some time, unable to settle upon a place to have some tapas, eventually she came to the square, Plaza Nueva, where a giant aquarium had been installed in recent years and paused to look at the fish. The foundations of the aquarium were sunken well below the level of the square so the bottom of the giant tank had some shade. …

… There were about a dozen very big, exotic looking fish of various species. A couple of them occasionally broke ranks and swam in swift, chaotic movements here and there, but the rest were swimming in processional order in a circle, round and round. There was a model of a shipwreck on the bottom of the tank. There were bits of broken, miniature ship furniture and a trunk and belongings spread around. All of this was covered with sand and seaweed; it gave a quite realistic impression of a catastrophe that may have happened many years ago.

Eden was there again watching the fish when …

Suddenly, in the glass of the aquarium, she saw the reflection of a man approaching her and a familiar voice spoke into her ear, ‘You like it here, watching the fish?’ She turned her head and met the doctor’s glittering eyes, her breath got caught in her chest. For a moment she stood open mouthed, unable to say a word.
